Canberra is a drawn city rather than a grown one, laid out around an artificial lake with its functions deliberately separated, and it has no single downtown in the way other capitals do. What it has instead is a set of town centres joined by parkways. The Australian National University occupies Acton, effectively its own suburb immediately west of the commercial centre everyone calls Civic, and the University of Canberra is at Bruce several kilometres north. Distances here are larger than a map of a city this size suggests.
Acton is the ANU campus and the streets attached to it, which makes it the shortest commute available and the quietest place to live. Civic and the City are next door, with the shops, the bus interchange, the light rail terminus and most of the purpose-built housing. Braddon just north has become the place people actually go in the evening, full of small bars and restaurants in converted warehouses. Turner and O'Connor are residential suburbs between ANU and Bruce, leafy and reasonably priced. Bruce and Belconnen are built around the University of Canberra and the hospital, with lower rents and a longer trip into town. Kingston and Barton are south of the lake, handsome and expensive, favoured by public servants rather than students.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Managed student buildings and apartments around Acton and Civic suit ANU, while Bruce and Belconnen make more sense for the University of Canberra. A studio offers privacy; a shared apartment or house offers more communal space.
Distances are large for the population, so check the bus, light-rail or cycle route. Furniture, heating, cooling and included utilities can materially change the cost.
MoJO currently lists 11 Canberra student stays, with published prices from A$211/week. Compare the full contract cost, included bills, deposit, payment dates and travel to your exact campus. A headline weekly or monthly figure is not enough on its own.
Confirm the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor requirements in writing. For a shared home, check the inventory, repairs, liability terms and how any deposit or bond is handled.
Canberra's student population is anchored by Australian National University and University of Canberra. When choosing student accommodation in Canberra, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Canberra property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Canberra include Acton and ANU, Civic and the City, Braddon, Turner and O'Connor, and Bruce and Belconnen. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Canberra, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Canberra typically starts from A$211/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Canberra typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Canberra rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Melbourne and Sydney: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some Australia universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Australia where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Transport Canberra runs the light rail from Gungahlin through Braddon into Civic, and buses for everything else, on one MyWay card. The light rail is useful if you are living along it and irrelevant otherwise, so check before you let it influence a decision. ANU to Civic is a ten minute walk; Civic to Bruce is a twenty minute bus. Canberra is flat, spread out and exceptionally well provided with separated cycle paths, which is how a lot of students here get around, and the loop around Lake Burley Griffin is the obvious one. Sydney is about three hours by road and Melbourne is a flight.
