Bordeaux's campus is not in Bordeaux. The domaine universitaire sits across the southern boundary in Talence, Pessac and Gradignan, a single large site where the Université de Bordeaux, Bordeaux Montaigne and Sciences Po all teach. One tram line, B, runs from the centre of the city straight out to it. Where you live here is largely a question of how far along that line you want to be, and the answer changes your rent more than it changes your journey.
Talence and the streets around the Peixotto and Béthanie tram stops put you on the campus itself, which is quiet, green and a little cut off from the city in the evenings. Victoire and Saint-Michel are the student heart of Bordeaux proper: place de la Victoire is where everyone ends up, the tram runs through it, and the campus is fifteen minutes down the line. Pessac is further out and cheaper, with its own centre. The Chartrons north of the middle is a former wine-trading quarter, now one of the nicer places to live and priced accordingly. The historic centre around Quinconces and Saint-Pierre is beautiful and expensive. La Bastide, across the Garonne, is the best value within a short tram ride.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Student residences and studios are common around Talence, Pessac and the tram corridor into the centre. A residence offers managed facilities, while a room in a shared flat gives more independence and often more communal space. The useful comparison is not simply Bordeaux versus Pessac, but distance from tram B and your campus stop.
Central rooms suit students who want city life; Talence and Pessac reduce the daily campus journey. Check furniture, utility limits, internet and summer dates before treating two monthly prices as equivalent.
MoJO currently lists 12 Bordeaux student stays, with published prices from €401/month. Compare total rent, deposit, fees, utilities and transport across the full contract. A room beside tram B can be more practical than a nominally central address that needs a change.
Get the exact room, inventory, move-in date, cancellation policy and guarantor conditions in writing. Confirm the commune shown on the agreement and whether the accommodation can provide any documents you need for study or administration.
Bordeaux's student population is anchored by Université de Bordeaux, Université Bordeaux Montaigne, Sciences Po Bordeaux, and KEDGE Business School. When choosing student accommodation in Bordeaux, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Bordeaux property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Bordeaux include Talence and the domaine universitaire, Victoire and Saint-Michel, Pessac, Chartrons and Bacalan, and Centre and Quinconces. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Bordeaux, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Bordeaux typically starts from €401/month, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Bordeaux typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Bordeaux rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Paris and Dublin: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some France universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The TBM network covers trams, buses and the river shuttle on one pass, with a reduced rate for students. Tram B is the one to plan around, running Quinconces to Victoire to Talence Peixotto and on to Pessac, and the whole trip from the centre to campus takes around twenty minutes. Bordeaux is also one of the flattest and most cycleable cities in France: the V3 hire scheme is widespread and the ride from Victoire to the campus is easy. Bordeaux Saint-Jean station reaches Paris in a little over two hours on the LGV, which makes weekends away realistic.
