About Bristol

Why students choose Bristol

Bristol is two student cities that happen to share a name. The University of Bristol sits in and around Clifton in the middle of town. UWE's main campus is at Frenchay, four miles north. A room that is a ten minute walk for one is a daily bus for the other, and that single fact decides more about a Bristol address than the rent does.

Bristol is a city of hills and villages rather than one centre, and student areas have distinct characters. Clifton and Redland put University of Bristol teaching within a walk and cost the most for it. Cotham and Kingsdown sit between the university precinct and Stokes Croft. Stokes Croft and Montpelier are cheaper, busier and well connected by bus. For UWE, Frenchay, Fishponds and Filton put you near the campus itself, while Gloucester Road is the long spine that links the north of the city to the centre and carries most of the student bus traffic.

  • Which Bristol room type works for your campus?

Managed student accommodation is concentrated around the centre, Stokes Croft and the University of Bristol side of the city. An en-suite room gives you a private bathroom with a shared kitchen; a studio adds a private kitchen; and a shared student flat usually gives more communal space. For UWE Frenchay, compare those central choices with rooms around Frenchay, Filton and Fishponds before assuming a newer city-centre building is more convenient.

Shared student houses are common in Redland, Cotham, Horfield, Fishponds and Bedminster. They may offer more space, but check whether utilities, internet and contents insurance sit outside the rent. Bristol's hills also make a cheap house less useful when the daily route involves a steep walk followed by a bus.

  • What should you compare before booking in Bristol?

MoJO currently lists 48 Bristol student stays, with published prices from £158/week. Compare the total rent for the full tenancy, included bills, deposit, payment dates and transport cost to your exact campus. A weekly price is not directly comparable when one contract is longer or includes utilities and the other does not.

Ask for the room category, move-in date, cancellation terms and guarantor rules in writing. For a shared house, also check who manages repairs, whether every occupier signs the same agreement and whether the property needs a local housing licence. Record the condition at move-in and establish how any tenancy deposit will be protected.

  • Top Bristol universities and campus links

Bristol's student population is anchored by University of Bristol and University of the West of England. When choosing student accommodation in Bristol, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Bristol property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Bristol

The best areas for student accommodation in Bristol include Clifton and Clifton Village, Redland and Cotham, Kingsdown and Stokes Croft, Montpelier and St Pauls, and Gloucester Road and Bishopston. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Bristol, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Bristol

The cost of student accommodation in Bristol typically starts from £158/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Bristol typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Bristol rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

Bristol is hilly and the walk back up to Clifton is steeper than a map suggests, so check your route in both directions before you commit. Metrobus runs the main north and south corridors, including the m1 towards UWE Frenchay, and Gloucester Road carries frequent services into the centre. Cycling is popular and the Bristol to Bath Railway Path is genuinely useful if you are living east. Temple Meads is the main rail station and sits slightly outside the centre, which matters if you plan to travel home often.
