Bundoora is a suburb of Melbourne rather than a place of its own, about sixteen kilometres north east of the city centre, and it exists on this site because La Trobe University's main campus is here. That campus is large and self-contained, with a wildlife sanctuary and a lake on it, and the housing around it is almost entirely students. What Bundoora does not have is a city: the trip into central Melbourne is a real commute, so this works well if your teaching is at La Trobe and poorly if it is anywhere else.
Bundoora itself is the campus and the streets attached to it, with purpose-built halls and low-rise flats, and nothing is more than a few minutes from a lecture. Reservoir and Preston sit between Bundoora and the city, on the train line, which makes them the compromise for anybody who wants both: cheaper than the inner suburbs and about forty minutes from the centre. Macleod and Mill Park are north and east, suburban and quiet, with the lowest rents here. Heidelberg is south towards the Austin hospital and suits health students. Thomastown and Lalor are north west on the same rail corridor. Brunswick and Coburg are further in towards the city, livelier and dearer, and about halfway between Bundoora and the CBD.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Managed apartments and studios near the university precinct offer predictable facilities, while shared houses in Bundoora and neighbouring suburbs provide more space. Campus proximity can remove a long Melbourne commute.
Check which institution and campus you attend, then test tram and bus routes. Heating, cooling, furniture and utility limits affect the total weekly cost.
MoJO currently lists 5 Bundoora student stays, with published prices from A$270/week. Compare total contract rent, included bills, deposit or bond, payment dates and travel to your exact campus. The headline figure does not show the full commitment.
Confirm the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor requirements in writing. For a shared home, check the inventory, repairs, liability terms and how any deposit or bond is handled.
Bundoora's student population is anchored by La Trobe University and RMIT Bundoora. When choosing student accommodation in Bundoora, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Bundoora property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Bundoora include Bundoora and La Trobe, Reservoir and Preston, Macleod and Mill Park, Heidelberg, and Thomastown and Lalor. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Bundoora, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Bundoora typically starts from A$270/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Bundoora typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Bundoora rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Melbourne and Sydney: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some Australia universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Australia where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Tram route 86 runs from the campus down Plenty Road through Preston to the city and takes around an hour end to end, which is longer than most people expect and the single most important thing to check before choosing Bundoora. The Mernda rail line through Reservoir and Preston is considerably faster into the centre, about half an hour, so an address near a station beats one near the tram. Buses link the campus to Macleod and Mill Park. The area is flat and the Darebin Creek trail gives a traffic-free cycle route south. Check your own concession eligibility with Public Transport Victoria, because international students in Victoria generally do not qualify.
