About Sydney

Why students choose Sydney

Settle your campus before you look at a single room here. The University of Sydney sits at Camperdown on the inner west edge of the centre, close enough to Newtown to walk to dinner. UNSW is four miles south east at Kensington and has no train line, only a light rail that takes about twenty minutes from Central. The housing around each of them is priced and let separately, so a room that looks good value on one side of the city can cost you an hour a day if you are studying on the other. Rents are the highest in Australia, which makes that hour expensive as well as long.

Camperdown, Darlington and Glebe are walking distance from Sydney University and priced accordingly, with Newtown a short walk further for anyone who wants the nightlife on the same street. Kensington, Kingsford and Randwick serve UNSW and are quieter, with more low rise blocks and a shorter walk to the campus gates. The CBD towers suit UTS students and anyone studying at a city campus, and they are the easiest option if you have not decided where you will spend your days. Rents are the highest in Australia and the spread on this page is very wide, because the cheapest figure is usually a bed in a shared room and the dearest is a studio of your own. Compare the room types, not the headline.

  • Private room, shared room or studio in Sydney?

Sydney listings can describe very different products with similar headlines. A shared room means sharing the bedroom as well as communal space; a private room keeps the bedroom yours but may share bathroom and kitchen facilities; an en-suite adds a private bathroom; and a studio adds private cooking space. Confirm occupancy and the exact floor plan before comparing prices.

Managed student accommodation is strongest around the CBD, Camperdown and the university corridors. Private share houses and apartments extend farther into the inner west and south east. Add electricity, internet, laundry and Opal travel to any private-market rent before deciding it is cheaper.

  • What should you verify before booking in Sydney?

MoJO currently lists 30 Sydney student stays, with published prices at the prices shown on this page. Compare total rent for the full agreement, bond, included utilities, occupancy, furnishings and the route to your campus. A bed in a shared room should never be compared directly with a private studio.

Ask for the room, start date, payment schedule, cancellation terms and any international-student requirements in writing. For a residential tenancy, establish how the bond will be lodged and complete the condition report carefully. Managed student residences can use different agreements, so read the document offered for that building.

  • Top Sydney universities and campus links

Sydney's student population is anchored by University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, and Macquarie University. When choosing student accommodation in Sydney, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Sydney property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Sydney

The best areas for student accommodation in Sydney include Camperdown, Darlington, Newtown, Kensington, and Sydney CBD. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Sydney, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Sydney

The cost of student accommodation in Sydney typically starts from A$320/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Sydney typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Sydney rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Melbourne and Brisbane: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some Australia universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

Light rail runs from Central to UNSW and takes about twenty minutes, which is the line most students here use daily. Sydney University has no station of its own: you walk from Redfern or Newtown, both about ten minutes. Trains cover the wider city well and an Opal card caps your weekly spend, which is worth knowing if you are deciding whether a cheaper room further out is really cheaper. The airport is on the train line and about half an hour from the centre, which makes the first arrival easier here than in most Australian cities.
