Frankfurt is the easiest city in Europe to arrive in and leave from. The airport is one of the largest on the continent and sits twelve minutes from the main station by train, which is itself a hub for the whole of Germany, and for an international student that convenience is worth something real. The Goethe-Universität has two main sites: the Westend campus, housed in a monumental former chemical company headquarters, and the older Bockenheim site nearby, with the science faculties out at Riedberg to the north.
Bockenheim is the traditional student district, immediately west of the Westend campus, with the Leipziger Straße shops and the lowest rents within walking distance of teaching. Westend itself is the grand quarter around the campus, nineteenth century villas and banks, calm and expensive. Sachsenhausen is across the Main to the south, the district people go out in, with the museum embankment along the river and a strong claim to being the nicest place here to live. Bornheim and Nordend are north east, residential and well liked, a little cheaper. Riedberg is far north around the science campus, purpose-built and quiet. Gallus and Griesheim are west towards the industrial park, the least expensive and the most mixed.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Student residences are limited and competitive, so a room in a WG is a common alternative. Studios offer privacy but carry the highest cost. The useful choice depends on whether teaching is at Westend, Bockenheim or Riedberg.
Compare the campus route, Anmeldung paperwork, furniture, heating and utilities. A room that looks central can still be inconvenient for the science campus in the north.

Frankfurt's student population is anchored by Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. When choosing student accommodation in Frankfurt, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Frankfurt property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Frankfurt include Bockenheim, Westend, Sachsenhausen, Bornheim and Nordend, and Riedberg. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Frankfurt, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Frankfurt typically starts from €880/month, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Frankfurt typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Frankfurt rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Paris and Dublin: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some Germany universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The RMV network covers U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses across the whole Rhine-Main region on one ticket, and the semester ticket included in most enrolment fees covers an unusually wide area, including trips well outside the city. Check what yours includes, because it is often more than people realise. Frankfurt is compact and flat, the Main riverside paths are good for cycling, and the city is small enough to cross on a bike in half an hour. Hauptbahnhof reaches Cologne in an hour, Berlin in four and Paris in under four, and the airport has its own long-distance station.
