Galway is a small city on the Atlantic edge of Ireland with a university beside the river and a chronic shortage of places to live. The University of Galway campus sits at Newcastle, a ten minute walk north west of the centre along the Corrib, which means the student geography here is unusually compact. It is also a city with a genuine cultural life out of proportion to its size, an arts festival that takes over the streets in July, and the Irish-speaking Connemara Gaeltacht starting half an hour west.
Newcastle is the area wrapped around the campus and the first place anyone looks, which is why nothing stays available in it for long. The city centre around Shop Street and the Latin Quarter gives you the pubs, the music and the shops, with flats above them and a short walk to teaching. Salthill runs along the bay to the south west, a seaside promenade with its own pubs, popular and a twenty minute walk or short bus in. The Westside and Rahoon are further west, residential and the least expensive, with buses into the centre. Renmore and Ballybane are east past the docks, cheaper and further from the social life. Knocknacarra is out beyond Salthill, suburban and well supplied with newer housing.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
University residences are convenient but limited. Most students search for a room in a shared house or apartment around Newcastle, the Westside and Salthill, while private studios are scarce and usually cost more.
Check the morning route as well as the postcode: congestion makes a distant bus journey less predictable than the map suggests. Compare bills, heating, furniture, damp and the length of the tenancy.
MoJO currently lists 3 Galway student stays, with published prices from £174.42/week. Compare the full tenancy cost, deposit, utilities and transport. Heating and electricity can materially change the winter budget in an older shared house.
Request the exact room, tenancy dates, inventory, notice conditions and deposit arrangements in writing. Galway's shortage attracts rushed decisions, so verify the landlord or operator and never pay solely to hold an unseen room.
Galway's student population is anchored by University of Galway and Atlantic Technological University. When choosing student accommodation in Galway, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Galway property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Galway include Newcastle, City centre and the Latin Quarter, Salthill, Westside and Rahoon, and Renmore and Ballybane. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Galway, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Galway typically starts from £174.42/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Galway typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Galway rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Paris and Dublin: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some Ireland universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Galway is a walking city: the campus to Shop Street takes ten minutes and Salthill to the centre about twenty five, all of it flat along the water. Bus Éireann and City Direct cover the outer suburbs with a Leap card, and the roads in and out of Galway are notoriously congested at peak times, which is an argument for living close in rather than driving. Ceannt station is in the centre with Dublin about two and a half hours away, and Connemara, the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher are all within an easy day. Cycling along the canal and the prom is pleasant; cycling on the main approach roads is less so.
