About Hamburg

Why students choose Hamburg

Hamburg has more bridges than any city on earth, which tells you most of what you need to know about its shape: this is a port built across a river delta, two lakes and a network of canals, and getting anywhere involves crossing water. The Universität Hamburg sits in Rotherbaum just west of the Binnenalster, which puts the main campus a walk from the city centre and a tram-free S-Bahn ride from almost everywhere else. It is an expensive city by German standards and a cheap one by Scandinavian ones.

Rotherbaum and Eimsbüttel are the university districts, between the Alster lake and the campus, which makes them the shortest walk and the most contested. St Pauli and the Schanzenviertel are south west, the famous loud half of Hamburg, with the Reeperbahn, the Friday night and rents that have climbed with the reputation. Altona is further west, a former separate town with its own station and better value for the space. Ottensen next to it is the one people recommend, full of small shops and restaurants. HafenCity is the rebuilt dockland south of the centre, new, striking and expensive, with the Elbphilharmonie on the end of it. Hammerbrook and Borgfelde sit just east of the main station, offices and canals rather than a neighbourhood, and cheaper than anywhere else this central. Wandsbek and Barmbek are east and north east, residential, well connected and the least expensive here.

  • Wohnheim room, WG or studio in Hamburg?

Student residences offer the clearest budget but have limited places. A WG room opens more neighbourhoods, while a studio brings privacy at a higher cost. Students at Harburg should search differently from those based at Rotherbaum.

Check the door-to-campus route, Anmeldung documents, heating, utilities and furniture. Crossing the Elbe or changing between outer rail lines can make a modest distance slow.

  • What should you confirm before booking in Hamburg?

MoJO currently lists 1 Hamburg student stays, with published prices from €989/month. Compare warm rent with electricity, internet, deposit and any travel not covered by your semester ticket.

Get the room size, inventory, registration position, notice period and deposit handling in writing. Verify who is entitled to let the room before transferring money, especially for a short-term sublet.

  • Top Hamburg universities and campus links

Hamburg's student population is anchored by Universität Hamburg, Technische Universität Hamburg, and HAW Hamburg. When choosing student accommodation in Hamburg, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Hamburg property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Hamburg

The best areas for student accommodation in Hamburg include Rotherbaum and Eimsbüttel, St Pauli and Schanzenviertel, Altona and Ottensen, HafenCity, and Hammerbrook and Borgfelde. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Hamburg, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Hamburg

The cost of student accommodation in Hamburg typically starts from €989/month, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Hamburg typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Hamburg rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Paris and Dublin: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some Germany universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

The HVV network covers S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses and the harbour ferries on one ticket, and a semester ticket is normally included in your enrolment fee, so check before buying anything. The ferries count as public transport, which means commuting across the Elbe by boat on a normal fare. Hamburg is flat and seriously cycled, with the Alster loop and the canal paths separated from traffic, and StadtRAD bikes are free for the first half hour. Hamburg Hauptbahnhof reaches Berlin in under two hours and Copenhagen in about five, and the airport is on the S1.
