Lille sits closer to Brussels than most French cities sit to their own neighbours, and the Eurostar stops here. Brussels is around half an hour by train and London under two, which makes this the easiest base on the site for anyone who wants to travel at weekends. The teaching is spread: law and medicine around the centre, humanities at Pont-de-Bois and the sciences at the Cité Scientifique in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, with both of the latter on metro line 1.
Vieux-Lille is the old Flemish quarter north of the centre, gabled and handsome, the most expensive and the most pleasant to walk through. Wazemmes is the one most students name: a big covered market, Sunday crowds, cheap food and cheap rooms, ten minutes from the middle. Moulins sits next to the law and medical faculties and is cheaper again, with a reputation that is mostly historical. Vauban and Esquermes are quieter and close to the Catholic university. Villeneuve-d'Ascq is a separate commune built around the science campus, with its own lakes and shops and much lower rents. Roubaix and Tourcoing are further out on the metro, the cheapest of all, and genuinely separate towns.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Student residences and studios cluster around the centre, Vauban and Villeneuve-d'Ascq. A residence offers managed facilities; a shared flat gives more independence. Science and humanities students should follow metro line 1 towards their actual campus.
Check furniture, utilities, internet and summer dates. A room in Lille proper and one in Villeneuve-d'Ascq can have similar travel times when the metro connection is direct.
MoJO currently lists 1 Lille student stays, with published prices from €670/month. Compare the full contract cost, included bills, deposit, payment dates and travel to your exact campus. A headline weekly or monthly figure is not enough on its own.
Confirm the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor requirements in writing. For a shared home, check the inventory, repairs, liability terms and how any deposit or bond is handled.
Lille's student population is anchored by Université de Lille, Université Catholique de Lille, and Sciences Po Lille. When choosing student accommodation in Lille, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Lille property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Lille include Vieux-Lille, Wazemmes and Gambetta, Moulins and Porte de Douai, Vauban and Esquermes, and Villeneuve-d'Ascq. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Lille, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Lille typically starts from €670/month, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Lille typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Lille rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Paris and Dublin: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some France universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in Europe where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Lille's two metro lines are fully automated and run frequently, with trams out to Roubaix and Tourcoing, all on one Ilévia pass with a student rate. Line 1 is the one to know, running from the centre out through Porte de Douai to the Cité Scientifique, and line 2 covers Roubaix and Tourcoing. The centre itself is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes and flat enough to cycle, with the V'Lille hire scheme throughout. Two stations sit side by side: Lille-Flandres for domestic trains and Lille-Europe for Eurostar, Thalys and the TGV to Paris in about an hour.
