About Marseille

Why students choose Marseille

Aix-Marseille is one university spread across sites that have very little to do with each other, so the first question here is which one you are on. Saint-Charles sits beside the main railway station in the middle of the city. La Timone, where medicine is taught, is east of the centre on metro line 1. Luminy is something else entirely: a science campus at the southern edge of the city, inside the Calanques national park, reached by a single bus route from the metro terminus. Those three answers point to three different halves of Marseille.

Saint-Charles and the streets around the station suit anyone on that campus and put you next to the trains, though the immediate area is busier than it is charming. La Plaine and Cours Julien, up the hill behind the Canebière, are where most students want to be: markets, bars, street art and the liveliest evenings in the city. Le Panier is the old town above the Vieux-Port, beautiful and tight. Castellane and Baille sit on metro line 1 between the centre and La Timone and are the practical choice for medics. The 8th arrondissement towards the beaches is quieter, greener and more expensive. For Luminy, look at Mazargues and the southern 9th, because nothing in the centre makes that commute short. Château-Gombert in the far north is the other campus cluster, built round the technopole and the Saint-Jérôme engineering faculty, and La Capelette in the 10th is ordinary, inexpensive and on the metro.

  • Which Marseille room type works for your campus?

Student residences and studios are spread between Saint-Charles, La Timone and the southern districts. A residence offers managed facilities; a shared flat gives more independence. The useful choice depends first on whether you study at Saint-Charles, La Timone, Luminy or Château-Gombert.

For Luminy, prioritise the B1 route and southern neighbourhoods. For La Timone, metro line 1 matters. Check cooling, furniture, utilities and the last transport home before comparing monthly prices.

  • What should you confirm before booking in Marseille?

MoJO currently lists 1 Marseille student stays, with published prices from €671/month. Compare total rent, deposit, fees, utilities and campus transport. A central address can create a long daily journey when your teaching is at Luminy or Château-Gombert.

Get the room, inventory, move-in date, cancellation policy and guarantor conditions in writing. Confirm the full address and transport stop, not only the arrondissement.

  • Top Marseille universities and campus links

Marseille's student population is anchored by Aix-Marseille Université and Kedge Business School Marseille. When choosing student accommodation in Marseille, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Marseille property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Marseille

The best areas for student accommodation in Marseille include Saint-Charles and Belsunce, La Plaine and Cours Julien, Le Panier and Vieux-Port, Castellane and Baille, and Prado and the 8th. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Marseille, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Marseille

The cost of student accommodation in Marseille typically starts from €671/month, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Marseille typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Marseille rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like Paris and Dublin: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some France universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

Two metro lines, three tram lines and a large bus network run on one RTM ticket, with a reduced student rate. Metro line 2 ends at Sainte-Marguerite Dromel and line 1 at La Fourragère, and the B1 bus from Rond-Point du Prado is the one that reaches Luminy. Allow a full hour from the centre to that campus and plan around the last bus, because there is nothing to walk back from. Marseille is hilly, hot in summer and not a natural cycling city, though the seafront and the Prado are flat. Saint-Charles reaches Paris in about three and a half hours and Aix in half an hour.
