About Aberdeen

Why students choose Aberdeen

Aberdeen gives you a sharper choice than most cities, because its two universities are nowhere near each other. The University of Aberdeen is in Old Aberdeen at the northern edge, around the granite of King's College. Robert Gordon University is at Garthdee in the south west, by the River Dee. That is about four miles of city between them, so an area that is a ten minute walk for one set of students is a bus journey across town for the other.

Old Aberdeen and Hillhead are the obvious choice for University of Aberdeen students, with King's College at the centre and Seaton Park behind it. Froghall and Powis sit immediately south and are cheaper, still walkable to King's. For Robert Gordon students, Garthdee has housing near campus and Mannofield and Broomhill sit between Garthdee and the centre. The city centre around Union Street works for either, because the buses to both campuses run through it, and it has most of the purpose-built blocks. Rosemount is a short walk west of the centre and quieter than its distance suggests. Torry is across the harbour and the cheapest of these.

  • Which Aberdeen room type suits your university?

Managed student buildings are mostly around the centre and the University of Aberdeen side of the city. An en-suite shares a kitchen, while a studio is self-contained. Robert Gordon students should compare those central choices with rooms around Garthdee, Mannofield and Broomhill.

Shared houses can provide more space and are common near both campuses, but the two universities sit at opposite ends of Aberdeen. Add bills and the daily bus route before comparing a house with an all-inclusive room.

  • What should you check before booking in Aberdeen?

MoJO currently lists 16 Aberdeen student stays, with published prices from £80/week. Compare the full tenancy cost, heating and other bills, deposit, payment dates and travel to your own campus. Heating arrangements matter more here than a small difference in floor area.

Confirm the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor rules in writing. For a shared house, check repairs, the inventory, joint-liability terms and whether the property meets local licensing requirements.

  • Top Aberdeen universities and campus links

Aberdeen's student population is anchored by University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University. When choosing student accommodation in Aberdeen, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Aberdeen property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Aberdeen

The best areas for student accommodation in Aberdeen include Old Aberdeen and Hillhead, Froghall and Powis, City centre and Union Street, Rosemount and Mile End, and Garthdee and Mannofield. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Aberdeen, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Aberdeen

The cost of student accommodation in Aberdeen typically starts from £80/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Aberdeen typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Aberdeen rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

Buses are the backbone here and the routes along King Street and Holburn Street are the ones to know, because they connect the centre to the two campuses. Journey times across the city run fifteen to twenty five minutes depending on traffic. Aberdeen is walkable within each half of itself but not easily between them, so a bike or a bus pass is close to essential if your teaching is split. The railway station is in the centre, with Edinburgh and Glasgow around two and a half hours away, and the granite streets are exposed enough that a decent coat outperforms most transport decisions.
