About Belfast

Why students choose Belfast

Belfast concentrates its students more tightly than almost any city in these islands. The Holylands, a grid of a dozen streets off the Ormeau Road named after Jerusalem, Damascus and Palestine, sits behind Queen's University and houses a remarkable share of its undergraduates. Ulster University moved its Belfast campus up to York Street in the Cathedral Quarter, which has opened up a second, very different half of the city.

The Holylands is cheap, close and busy, and its reputation for noise is earned rather than invented. Stranmillis and Malone, south along the Lagan, are the quieter and more expensive alternative, still walkable to Queen's and next to the Botanic Gardens. Botanic and Queen's Quarter proper sit around the university buildings, with the cafes on Botanic Avenue and the railway station on the doorstep. The Cathedral Quarter and the city centre are where Ulster University students now look, with most of the newer purpose-built blocks. Ormeau and Ravenhill are further out and better value, popular with postgraduates.

  • Which Belfast room type fits your university?

Managed student buildings cluster around Queen's Quarter, the centre and the new Ulster University campus. An en-suite shares a kitchen; a studio is self-contained. Queen's students should compare these with shared houses in the Holylands, Stranmillis and Ormeau.

Shared houses offer more communal space but vary in condition, noise and included bills. For Ulster University, a central or Cathedral Quarter address can remove the daily cross-city journey.

  • What should you check before booking in Belfast?

MoJO currently lists 15 Belfast student stays, with published prices from £129/week. Compare full-tenancy rent, included bills, deposit, payment dates and travel to your own campus. A cheap Holylands room may suit one student and be completely wrong for another.

Confirm the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor rules in writing. For a shared house, check repairs, joint-liability terms, deposit protection and any local licensing requirements.

  • Top Belfast universities and campus links

Belfast's student population is anchored by Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University. When choosing student accommodation in Belfast, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Belfast property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Belfast

The best areas for student accommodation in Belfast include Holylands and Lower Ormeau, Botanic and Queen's Quarter, Stranmillis and Malone, Cathedral Quarter and city centre, and Ormeau and Ravenhill. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Belfast, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Belfast

The cost of student accommodation in Belfast typically starts from £129/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Belfast typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Belfast rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

Belfast is compact and most student journeys here are walks: the Holylands to the Queen's Lanyon Building takes about ten minutes, and Botanic station to the centre is one stop. Translink runs the Glider, a bus rapid transit route crossing the city east to west, and Metro buses cover the rest, all on one card. Botanic, City Hospital and Lanyon Place are the three stations that matter. The city is flat along the Lagan and the towpath makes a genuinely pleasant cycle, and the Belfast Bikes scheme covers the centre and the university areas.
