About Birmingham

Why students choose Birmingham

Birmingham pulls students in two directions and they rarely meet. The University of Birmingham is at Edgbaston, with Selly Oak as its student quarter and its own stop on the Cross City line. Aston and Birmingham City are in the centre among the newer towers, and their students have no reason to go near Selly Oak at all.

Selly Oak is the long-established University of Birmingham area, mostly shared houses along and off the Bristol Road, with Harborne a quieter and slightly more expensive alternative on the other side of campus. Edgbaston itself is greener and closer to teaching. For Aston, Birmingham City and University College Birmingham, the centre is the obvious choice, with Digbeth, Eastside and the Jewellery Quarter all within walking distance of city campuses. Moseley and Kings Heath sit further south and attract students who want somewhere with a bit more life of its own.

Read the guide
  • Which Birmingham student room fits your campus?

Purpose-built student accommodation is strongest in the city centre, Eastside and around the edge of the University of Birmingham campus. En-suite rooms share a kitchen, studios keep the kitchen private, and cluster flats vary greatly in the number of students sharing. Check the floor plan and exact building rather than treating every room label as equivalent.

Selly Oak and Bournbrook have a large market for shared student houses, particularly for returning University of Birmingham students. City-centre rooms usually suit Aston and BCU better. Compare a house with a managed room using the total cost of utilities, internet, travel and the whole tenancy, not only the advertised weekly rent.

  • What should Birmingham students verify before paying?

MoJO currently lists 46 Birmingham student stays, with published prices from £95/week. Confirm the precise room, contract length, payment instalments, included bills and route to your teaching building. A Selly Oak room and an Eastside room can serve entirely different campuses even when their prices match.

For a shared house, check the inventory, repair contact, deposit protection and whether the property needs a council licence. For managed accommodation, ask for the cancellation, guarantor and replacement-tenant terms in writing, together with confirmation that the advertised move-in date is available.

  • Top Birmingham universities and campus links

Birmingham's student population is anchored by University of Birmingham, Aston University, Birmingham City University, and University College Birmingham. When choosing student accommodation in Birmingham, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Birmingham property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Birmingham

The best areas for student accommodation in Birmingham include Selly Oak and Bournbrook, Edgbaston, Harborne, City centre and Eastside, and Digbeth. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Birmingham, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Birmingham

The cost of student accommodation in Birmingham typically starts from £95/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Birmingham typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Birmingham rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

The Cross City railway line is the detail worth knowing: University station sits on the edge of the Birmingham campus, so a room near Selly Oak, Bournville or Kings Norton station is a short train ride rather than a bus. The Bristol Road also carries very frequent buses between Selly Oak and the centre. Birmingham has trams on the West Midlands Metro, but they run north west out of the centre and are less relevant to most students. The centre itself is compact and walkable between the city campuses.
