About Bournemouth

Why students choose Bournemouth

Bournemouth has no edge to it. Along with Christchurch and Poole it forms one continuous built-up strip about ten miles end to end, under a single council since 2019, and nothing on the ground tells you where one town stops. That matters when you are reading addresses: a room advertised here might be ten minutes from the pier or most of the way to Poole. Bournemouth University and the Arts University both sit at Talbot on the Wallisdown road, roughly on the seam between the two towns, which is a useful landmark to measure everything else against.

Winton is the answer most students arrive at: a long high street of takeaways and charity shops running towards Talbot, walkable to campus in fifteen minutes and cheaper than anything nearer the water. Charminster is next door and much the same, slightly closer to town. Talbot Village and Wallisdown put you on the campus doorstep with almost nothing else around you. The town centre and Lansdowne have the purpose-built blocks, the station and the nightlife, plus a bus to teaching. Boscombe and Pokesdown are east along the coast, the cheapest rooms here, with their own beach and their own railway halt. Westbourne is the pleasant option between the town and Poole.

  • Which Bournemouth room type works for Talbot campus?

Managed student buildings cluster around Lansdowne and the town centre, with UniBus links to Talbot. An en-suite shares a kitchen, while a studio is self-contained. Shared houses in Winton and Charminster usually put the campus closer.

A coastal or central address may suit the social side but add a daily bus. Compare included bills and the actual Talbot route before choosing by the word Bournemouth alone.

  • What should you check before booking in Bournemouth?

MoJO currently lists 11 Bournemouth student stays, with published prices from £109/week. Compare the full contract cost, included bills, deposit, payment dates and travel to your exact campus. A headline weekly or monthly figure is not enough on its own.

Confirm the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor requirements in writing. For a shared home, check the inventory, repairs, liability terms and how any deposit or bond is handled.

  • Top Bournemouth universities and campus links

Bournemouth's student population is anchored by Bournemouth University and Arts University Bournemouth. When choosing student accommodation in Bournemouth, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Bournemouth property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Bournemouth

The best areas for student accommodation in Bournemouth include Winton, Charminster, Talbot Village and Wallisdown, Town centre and Lansdowne, and Boscombe and Pokesdown. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Bournemouth, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Bournemouth

The cost of student accommodation in Bournemouth typically starts from £109/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Bournemouth typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Bournemouth rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

The Unibus services between the town, Winton and the Talbot campus are what makes living away from campus workable, and they run frequently through the day. Allow fifteen to twenty minutes from the town centre. Bournemouth and Pokesdown stations sit on the South Western line, with London Waterloo around two hours and Southampton about forty minutes. The whole conurbation is flat along the clifftop and the promenade, which makes cycling genuinely pleasant, and the seafront route between Bournemouth and Poole is traffic free for most of its length.
