About Brighton

Why students choose Brighton

Brighton is the tightest market we list in the UK, and not because of distance. It is a small city hemmed in by the Downs and the sea, with two universities, a large commuter population earning London salaries, and nowhere to expand. Sussex and much of the University of Brighton teach at Falmer, four miles inland and a short train ride from the centre. The useful thing to know is that rooms go early here, and waiting rarely improves your options.

Falmer puts you next to both Sussex and Brighton's campus there, with the station on the doorstep and very little else around it. Moulsecoomb and Coldean sit between Falmer and the city, cheaper, and closer to the University of Brighton's Moulsecoomb site. Lewes Road is the spine connecting campus to town and is where a great deal of student housing sits, including most of the purpose-built blocks. Hanover and Elm Grove climb the hill east of the centre, popular and steep. The North Laine and the centre are the liveliest and the dearest. Hove, west along the coast, is quieter and often better value for the space.

  • Which Brighton room type works for your campus?

Managed student buildings sit mainly around Lewes Road, Moulsecoomb and the centre. An en-suite shares a kitchen, while a studio is self-contained. Students at Falmer should test the train or number 25 route rather than judging a central room by distance alone.

Shared houses are common around Lewes Road, Hanover, Moulsecoomb and Coldean. They can provide more space but bills, hills and transport vary, and good options disappear early in Brighton.

  • What should you check before booking in Brighton?

MoJO currently lists 13 Brighton student stays, with published prices from £199/week. Compare total rent, bills, deposit, payment schedule and the route to your exact campus. A longer contract or regular train use changes the real cost.

Verify the operator or landlord, room category, move-in date and cancellation terms before paying. For a shared house, check the inventory, repair process, joint liability and deposit protection.

  • Top Brighton universities and campus links

Brighton's student population is anchored by University of Sussex and University of Brighton. When choosing student accommodation in Brighton, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Brighton property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Brighton

The best areas for student accommodation in Brighton include Falmer and Stanmer, Lewes Road and Bevendean, Moulsecoomb and Coldean, Hanover and Elm Grove, and North Laine and city centre. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Brighton, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Brighton

The cost of student accommodation in Brighton typically starts from £199/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Brighton typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Brighton rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

The 25 bus along Lewes Road runs between the centre and Falmer constantly and is how most students make that trip; the train from Brighton to Falmer takes under ten minutes and is quicker when it lines up. The city is small enough to walk end to end along the seafront, though the streets north of the centre are considerably steeper than they look on a map. Brighton station reaches London Victoria in about an hour and Gatwick in half of that. Cycling is popular along the coast road and much less fun on the hills inland.
