Cardiff does something few cities manage: its main campus and its main student area occupy the same ground. Cardiff University is spread through Cathays Park and the streets immediately north of it, and those streets are where most of its students live. You can finish a lecture and be home in five minutes, which is why Cathays stays full and why the rest of the city is priced against it.
Cathays is the obvious first choice and the busiest, a grid of terraces with its own railway station and almost no one living in it who is not a student. Roath, just east, is the usual second year move: quieter streets, Roath Park at the top, and a short walk or cycle back in. The Heath sits north near the hospital and suits medics and anyone at the School of Medicine. Cardiff Metropolitan's campuses at Llandaff and Cyncoed are further out and have their own nearby options rather than sharing Cathays. The city centre and Cardiff Bay hold most of the newer blocks, the Bay being quieter, further from teaching and connected by its own train line.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Managed student buildings are concentrated in the centre, Cathays and around the main routes north. An en-suite gives you a private bathroom and shared kitchen; a studio keeps the kitchen private; and a cluster flat can work well for a ready-made group. Cardiff University students can often walk from these areas.
Shared houses dominate Cathays, Roath and parts of the Heath. They usually provide more communal space, but bills and furnishings vary. Cardiff Metropolitan students should check whether Llandaff or Cyncoed is their main campus before choosing a central address.
MoJO currently lists 23 Cardiff student stays, with published prices from £149/week. Compare the total contract cost, included bills, deposit or other security, payment dates and travel to your exact campus. A Bay address can be attractive but is less convenient for most teaching than Cathays or the centre.
Ask for the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor rules in writing. Rental agreements in Wales use Welsh housing rules, so read the occupation contract supplied for the property and keep copies of every payment and condition report.
Cardiff's student population is anchored by Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and University of South Wales. When choosing student accommodation in Cardiff, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Cardiff property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Cardiff include Cathays and Maindy, Roath and Plasnewydd, City centre and Callaghan Square, The Heath and Gabalfa, and Cardiff Bay and Butetown. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Cardiff, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Cardiff typically starts from £149/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Cardiff typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Cardiff rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Most of Cardiff's student travel is on foot, because the distances in Cathays and Roath are short and the city is flat. Cathays station sits on the Valley Lines and is one stop from Cardiff Queen Street, which is the hub for everything else including Cardiff Bay and Llandaff North. Buses cover the Met campuses and the outer suburbs, and Nextbike stands are spread across the centre. Cardiff Central reaches Bristol in under an hour and London Paddington in around two, and the city is compact enough that a bike removes the need for anything else.
