Glasgow's student geography is settled by a single underground line. The Subway runs one circle, linking the West End where the University of Glasgow sits to the centre where Strathclyde and Caledonian are, and most commutes here are one or two stops. That matters more than it sounds, because it means the usual trade between rent and travel barely applies: you are not choosing between a cheap room far out and an expensive room near campus, you are choosing between a tenement flat in the West End and a purpose built room in town, both about fifteen minutes from everything. Glasgow is also one of the cheapest big cities on this site, and the gap is wide enough to change what you can afford to study on.
The West End around Hillhead, Kelvinbridge and Partick is the University of Glasgow's own territory: sandstone tenements, Byres Road for everything you need, and flats let room by room. Much of it is older housing rather than student blocks, so it is worth asking what the heating is and how old the windows are before you sign, because a Glasgow tenement in February is a different flat from the one you viewed in June. The city centre and Merchant City is where the purpose built towers are, and it suits Strathclyde and Caledonian students who can walk to teaching in ten minutes. Finnieston sits between the two and is where people go to eat. Dennistoun to the east and Shawlands on the Southside are noticeably cheaper, with more shared flats and a commute of fifteen or twenty minutes by bus or train, and they are where students move once they know the city.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
The West End is dominated by traditional tenement flats and shared private rentals, while the centre carries more managed student residences. In a managed building, compare en-suite rooms, studios and shared apartments by kitchen size, number of flatmates and included services. In a tenement, pay particular attention to heating, glazing, energy costs, stair access and who handles repairs.
A studio offers privacy but can cost considerably more than a room in a shared flat. Govan, Ibrox, Dennistoun and the Southside may offer more space for the rent, but measure the route to your campus and the last practical journey home rather than judging by distance alone.
MoJO currently lists 47 Glasgow student stays, with published prices from £179/week. Put the full contract cost beside heating, electricity, internet, laundry and daily travel. That calculation matters in older flats, where an attractive rent can be offset by winter energy use.
Scotland uses its own tenancy and deposit rules, so do not rely on advice written for England. Confirm the agreement type, notice and cancellation terms, deposit arrangements, inventory, guarantor requirement and payment schedule before signing. For a managed residence, ask whether the quoted room and move-in date remain available.
Glasgow's student population is anchored by University of Glasgow, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, and Glasgow School of Art. When choosing student accommodation in Glasgow, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Glasgow property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Glasgow include Hillhead and the West End, Kelvinbridge and Woodlands, Partick and Hyndland, Finnieston and Yorkhill, and Merchant City and city centre. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Glasgow, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Glasgow typically starts from £179/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Glasgow typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Glasgow rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
The Subway is a single circular line and it is the thing to plan around: Hillhead, Kelvinbridge and Partick on the west side, Buchanan Street and St Enoch in the centre. It is quick, it is cheap, and it shuts earlier than any metro you have used, around half past eleven on weeknights and six on a Sunday, so check the last train before you rely on it for a late library session. Buses run later and cover the gaps, the Southside is better served by train than by Subway, and the city is flat enough that a West End to centre walk along the Kelvin is a genuine option in decent weather. Queen Street and Central stations are both in the middle of town, with Edinburgh under an hour from Queen Street.
