About Lancaster

Why students choose Lancaster

Lancaster University is not in Lancaster, quite. It sits at Bailrigg about three miles south of the city on a self-contained collegiate campus with its own shops, bars and library, and the city is a bus ride away down the A6. The University of Cumbria has a campus much closer in. That gap is the whole decision here: campus living puts you next to teaching and a long way from a city, and city living reverses both.

The city centre around the castle and Penny Street is where most students who move off campus end up, within walking distance of the pubs, the market and the station. Scotforth and Bowerham sit between the city and Bailrigg, which shortens the bus and keeps the rent below the centre. Bailrigg and the streets immediately around campus are the shortest commute, though supply there is thin because the university holds most of it. Freehold and Primrose are east of the centre, cheaper, and a steady source of shared houses. Morecambe, out on the bay, is the cheapest option of all and a genuine train or bus journey away.

Read the guide
  • Campus room, city building or shared house in Lancaster?

Campus accommodation at Bailrigg removes the daily journey and keeps university facilities close. Managed buildings in the city provide a more independent setting, while shared houses around the centre, Bowerham and Scotforth offer more communal space.

City living means using the A6 bus corridor to campus. Check the nearest stop, late service and walking route, then add utilities if you are comparing a shared house with an all-inclusive room.

  • What should you check before booking in Lancaster?

MoJO currently lists 13 Lancaster student stays, with published prices from £95/week. Compare full-tenancy rent, bills, deposit, payment dates and regular bus costs. A city room and a Bailrigg room solve different daily problems.

Confirm the room category, move-in date, cancellation terms and guarantor requirements in writing. In a shared house, check repairs, inventory, joint liability and deposit protection.

  • Top Lancaster universities and campus links

Lancaster's student population is anchored by Lancaster University and University of Cumbria. When choosing student accommodation in Lancaster, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Lancaster property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Lancaster

The best areas for student accommodation in Lancaster include City centre and Penny Street, Scotforth and Bowerham, Bailrigg and Galgate, Freehold and Primrose, and Morecambe. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Lancaster, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Lancaster

The cost of student accommodation in Lancaster typically starts from £95/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Lancaster typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Lancaster rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

The 2, 2A and 4 buses between the city and Bailrigg run every few minutes through the day and late into the evening, and they are the single most important thing to check against any address. The ride takes around fifteen minutes. Cycling the campus route is popular and there is a dedicated path for much of it, though the last stretch climbs. Lancaster station is on the West Coast Main Line, which puts Manchester at about an hour, Glasgow at two and a half and London around two and a half, so this is an easy city to leave at a weekend.
