About Liverpool

Why students choose Liverpool

Liverpool is unusually easy to place a student in. The University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores do not really have separate campuses, more a set of interleaved buildings around Brownlow Hill and Mount Pleasant, so a central room generally works for either. Liverpool Hope is the exception, out at Childwall, and that one is a proper commute.

The Knowledge Quarter around Brownlow Hill holds most of the purpose-built accommodation and puts both central universities within a walk. The Georgian Quarter and Hope Street are handsome and slightly quieter, a short walk downhill to teaching. Kensington and Edge Hill are cheaper and closer than their reputation suggests. Smithdown Road, running south towards Sefton Park, is the traditional shared house corridor for second and third years. The waterfront and Ropewalks put you in the middle of the nightlife, which is a decision in itself.

  • Which Liverpool room type suits the way you study?

Most managed student buildings sit around the Knowledge Quarter, city centre and Baltic side of town. En-suite rooms share a kitchen, studios provide private cooking space, and larger student apartments vary in the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. Central options are particularly practical for the University of Liverpool and LJMU because both institutions are within walking distance.

Smithdown Road, Wavertree, Kensington and Aigburth offer more shared houses and private flats. These can suit established groups and returning students, but compare furniture, energy, internet and travel with the inclusive price of a managed room. Liverpool Hope students should test the Childwall journey separately.

  • What should you check before booking in Liverpool?

MoJO currently lists 45 Liverpool student stays, with published prices from £95/week. Compare the total tenancy cost, included bills, deposit, laundry and any bus or rail expense. Also check whether a low advertised price belongs to the room category and dates you actually need.

Get the move-in date, cancellation route, guarantor rule and payment plan in writing. For shared housing, establish who is responsible for bills and repairs, how the inventory is recorded and how any deposit will be protected before the group signs.

  • Top Liverpool universities and campus links

Liverpool's student population is anchored by University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Hope University, and Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. When choosing student accommodation in Liverpool, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each Liverpool property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in Liverpool

The best areas for student accommodation in Liverpool include Knowledge Quarter and Brownlow Hill, Georgian Quarter and Hope Street, City centre and Ropewalks, Kensington and Edge Hill, and Smithdown Road and Wavertree. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to Liverpool, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in Liverpool

The cost of student accommodation in Liverpool typically starts from £95/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Liverpool typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If Liverpool rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

Liverpool's centre is compact and most students walk to teaching, which is the main reason the city is cheaper to live in than its size implies. Merseyrail covers the wider city and is quick if you are further out, and buses run frequently along Smithdown Road and Kensington into the centre. The one route worth checking properly is Childwall for Liverpool Hope, which is a real bus journey rather than a walk, and worth timing at nine in the morning before you take a room on that side of the city.
