Plymouth puts almost everything within one walk. The University of Plymouth's campus occupies a block of the city centre rather than a site on the edge of town, the shops are on one side of it and Plymouth Hoe and the open water are about ten minutes down the hill on the other. For a student that combination is unusual: you can live centrally, walk to teaching, and still see the sea on the way to a lecture.
North Hill runs straight up from campus and is the closest student street, which makes it both convenient and loud. Mutley and Mutley Plain carry on beyond it with the takeaways, the bars and most of the shared houses, and that stretch is where the majority of Plymouth students end up after first year. Greenbank and Lipson sit east of Mutley, quieter and a little cheaper. The Hoe and the Barbican are the handsome end of the city, Georgian and waterfront, and priced for the view rather than the commute. Stoke and Peverell are further out to the west, residential, with more space for the money. Devonport is the cheapest of these and has its own railway station.
Room types, what bills included really covers, when to book, and what to check if you are arriving from abroad.
Managed student buildings sit close to the University of Plymouth, Drake Circus and North Hill. An en-suite shares a kitchen, while a studio is self-contained. Both usually keep teaching within a short walk.
Shared houses are common around Mutley, Greenbank, Lipson and Peverell. They can offer more living space, but add utilities and the hill back to campus before comparing them with an all-inclusive central room.
MoJO currently lists 13 Plymouth student stays, with published prices from £115/week. Compare full-contract rent, bills, deposit, payment dates and distance to your actual campus. Marjon students need a different route calculation from students at the central university campus.
Confirm the room category, move-in condition, cancellation terms and guarantor rules in writing. For a shared house, check repairs, inventory, joint liability and deposit protection.
Plymouth's student population is anchored by University of Plymouth and Plymouth Marjon University. When choosing student accommodation in Plymouth, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.
On each Plymouth property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.
The best areas for student accommodation in Plymouth include North Hill and Greenbank, Mutley and Mutley Plain, City centre and Drake Circus, The Hoe and the Barbican, and Stoke and Peverell. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.
If you are new to Plymouth, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.
The cost of student accommodation in Plymouth typically starts from £115/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in Plymouth typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.
If Plymouth rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.
Comparing options? These are the other cities in UK where most students on our shortlist are basing themselves.
Most of student Plymouth is walkable, and the one thing worth knowing is that the city is built on hills running down to the water, so a return journey is rarely as easy as the outward one. Plymouth Citybus and Stagecoach cover the suburbs, and Plymouth railway station sits a few minutes north of campus. Trains reach Exeter in about an hour and London Paddington in three and a half, which is the longest run to the capital of any UK city we list. The ferry across to Mount Edgcumbe is a genuine shortcut into Cornwall rather than a tourist novelty.
