About York

Why students choose York

York is a medieval city with a modern university a mile and a half outside it, and the gap between those two things shapes everything. The University of York's Heslington campus sits south east beyond the walls, built around lakes in what was farmland. York St John is the opposite case, tucked inside the walls next to the Minster. So the city has two student populations with almost no overlap in where they look for a room.

Heslington and Badger Hill are the closest residential streets to the University of York and the shortest walk to teaching. Fulford and Fishergate sit between campus and the walls, which is the usual compromise: twenty minutes either way, and cheaper than inside. Micklegate and Bishophill are the residential streets inside the walls, where York St John students concentrate along with most of the city's visitors, and rents there reflect the postcode rather than the student market. Tang Hall and Heworth are east and north east, the cheapest of the areas with a realistic commute. Holgate and Acomb lie west of the station and work better for St John than for York.

  • Which York room type fits your university?

Managed student buildings sit mainly outside the historic core and along routes between the centre and Heslington. An en-suite shares a kitchen, while a studio is self-contained. York St John students benefit from central and northern addresses; University of York students should prioritise Heslington access.

Shared houses are common in Fulford, Fishergate, Tang Hall and Badger Hill. They may offer more space, but add bills and the campus journey before comparing them with an all-inclusive room.

  • What should you check before booking in York?

MoJO currently lists 15 York student stays, with published prices from £175/week. Compare full-tenancy rent, bills, deposit, payment dates and travel to the correct university. Inside-the-walls addresses carry a premium that may add little practical value for a Heslington student.

Confirm the room category, move-in date, cancellation terms and guarantor rules in writing. For a shared house, check the inventory, repair contact, joint-liability terms and how the tenancy deposit will be protected.

  • Top York universities and campus links

York's student population is anchored by University of York and York St John University. When choosing student accommodation in York, most students prioritise the walking-distance or single-transfer commute to their own department, since it saves 60 to 90 minutes a day on lectures, labs, and evening study.

On each York property page you will see the exact minute count to nearby universities and whether the campus is served by direct public transport. If you already know your university, filter by it before comparing rooms, it saves a lot of back and forth.

  • Best areas for students in York

The best areas for student accommodation in York include Heslington and Badger Hill, Fulford and Fishergate, Micklegate and Bishophill, Tang Hall and Heworth, and Holgate and Acomb. Each has a distinct mix of student housing, cafes, supermarkets, and public transport connections, so the "best" area really depends on which university you attend and what kind of neighbourhood you want to live in.

If you are new to York, aim for neighbourhoods with a high student population and good late-night public transport. Areas near your university's main campus are safest for evening walks home and mean you can lie in for 9 AM lectures.

  • Cost of living for students in York

The cost of student accommodation in York typically starts from £175/week, and rent is usually the single biggest line item in a student's budget. Beyond rent, students in York typically budget for groceries, public transport, mobile data, and social spending.

If York rents feel steep, it can be worth comparing with cities like London and Nottingham: the same weekly budget often stretches further, and some the United Kingdom universities have satellite campuses across multiple cities.

Getting around

The number 66 and the UB1 run between the city and Heslington campus and are the services most University of York students live by. Cycling is genuinely the best way to get around here: the city is flat, the routes along the Ouse and the old railway lines are separated from traffic, and the ride from the walls to campus takes about fifteen minutes. York station is on the East Coast Main Line, which means London in under two hours and Edinburgh in around two and a half. Driving inside the walls is restricted and parking is scarce, so a car is more trouble than it saves.
